URBAN DESIGN AWAKENING

2017 is a time period in which overwhelming amounts of data is being generated by most citizens. Internet-connected electronic devices all over this Earth are disturbing the minds of earthlings in their daily course of living.

Two intimate connections are impacting all citizens waking moments. Their daily decisions are influenced by the flows of surreptitious data communications and monetary exchanges.

Advances in the clarity of thinking from many disciplines are still centripetal. However, centrifugal thoughts are beginning to be awakened, universally.

One is reminded however that generating Nuclear energy was conceived, integrated, used, implemented and brought together into reality by many disciplinary intelligence and skills. Similarly, from concept to the reality the Nuclear bomb adopted the same pattern of creation. Unfortunately, these genies let out of the bottle have caused serious eternal consequences for humanity.

The USA astronauts landing on the Moon has had another behavioral impact. Many significant and wealthy corporate CEO’s have directed their attention to reaching Mars. The common competitive beliefs emanate from an attitude that Earth is in such a decline that their imperative mission is to dispatch colonies into outer space for Human Survival.

It is clear that responsible actions of stewardship for Earth to balance survival, sustainability, resilience, and durability with a new conceptual insertion of urban ideas is not in corporate self-interests. The umbilical cord attachment to Earth is rarely acknowledged in their mission.

Fostering, nurturing, promoting, encouraging cleansing the Earth’s gifts of abundance with increasing populations is a mandatory priority. The arousal of sociocultural, economic and physical degradation awareness of Nature is enlightening many disciplinary domains to rethink their roles for regenerative design purposes.

Some words are written that attempt to simply satisfy my indulgence and concern of self-interest for Urban Design as follows: –

• Cities demand full design attention.
• Do not underestimate the citizen for design ideas.
• All individuals are designers of things.
• Each individual takes action when they see a personal fit for a purpose.
• All designers are in transition to take their idea of observation into an existing reality either for an incremental improvement or toward a new solution.
• Urban design sourced from many disciplinary domains, therefore, must acknowledge a collective change to see their role in a participatory design system that converges into reality.
• Urban design values should spring from self-enhancement to self-transcendence and openness to change for conservation.
• Urban design distinguishes itself from apartheid disciplines as an integrator.
• Urban design has been violated by segregation into corporate, academic and politbureau domains.
• Designs for urban futures come instinctively and freely from all contributors with hope and confidence for change.
• Design amalgamation processes by which they are received and evaluated are the problem. Citizen-leadership for decision-making is the foundation for design changes in villages, towns, cities, regions, and sovereign nation capitals.
• Design cannot be done in silence, in emergencies, or in violence to provide safety and security within the framework of the present Democracy.
• A Constitution with individual rights that do not protect citizens in the current top-down decision-making process is unacceptable.
• The final urban design decisions made after a rightful presentation, posture, debate, critique, and evaluation is critical.
• Corporate, Academic and Politbureau threats hold onto borders, limitations, boundary restrictions, margins and precincts for any thoughts of positive urban change.
• Populations on every continent live inside or outside these mind-map strictures, attacks, rebukes, censures, dressing-downs and telling off.
• Linking the dots of individual ideas must be offered rewards. Ignoring citizen contributions to advancing life together has produced inequality.
• The risk/reward for individual design idea contribution is ignored.
• Citizen-leadership decision-making is a place where the roundtable reverses conversations from Ministers looking down to looking up at citizens.
• Digital models, simulations and other methods of knowledge exchange are exploration tools to be directed by humankind.
• Evolutionary life-long learning takes place with all citizens in “Calm Rooms” (not War Rooms or Situation Rooms) with figures, charts, and illustrations to guide discussions for decision-making on urban issues.
• Originality with logical thinking of advancing local futures for living together is created for approval, acceptance, and insertion into reality.
• Urban design must solve problems.
• Urban design crests in a multidisciplinary action-oriented environment.
• Urban design takes the best brains to resolve the creation of places for habitation.
• The “Genius Cluster” Ministers seated at the roundtable moderate the urban agenda with citizen participation.
• Urban design is a conduit of iterative information of validated conceptual thoughts for work supported and distributed by the “Stakeholder R&D Laboratories”.
• “Stakeholder R&D Laboratories” is the storehouse of tested and accumulated knowledge drawn from many disciplinary domains.
• Approvals of technology emanate from “Stakeholder R&D Laboratories” for insertion into urban realms.
• Mutual building of trust between “Genius Clusters”, “Geoscopes”, “Calm Rooms”, and “Stakeholder R&D Laboratories” must be established.
• Urban design is revealed in real-time between action and reaction.
• Urban design becomes a live system for change, in essence, to be conducted by exemplars of behavior understanding paradigms, patterns, standards, archetypes, prototypes, ideas, and models.
• Urban design, therefore, must reveal an evaluation between untruthful plans versus precious plans that are deemed suitable for Peace, Prosperity, and Liberty.
• Urban design must reclaim strength for intermediate solutions on issues via assessments and consequences measured on short, medium and long-term time issues.
• Urban design tracks the progress of development implementation that rewards citizen contributions.
• Urban design is the antennae of overcoming dystopia for utopia.
• Thus urban design adopts a different platform for design to be acceptable for the next generation.
• Urban design is an omnidirectional evolution to finding truths between good and bad plans.
• Urban policy must exude honesty regarding mistakes in strategies and tactics taken with citizens who find legitimate faults in the dark side of design.
• The ultimate urban plan truth finding is not always found in an interview between two people. Cultures express connection for beginning and ending personal attention with bowing, placing two hands together and/or a handshake. Eye contact opening and closing words are brief and polite, possibly seeking another moment in life for an additional conversational connection.
• In the end, the urban design purpose is an inclusion of worthwhile innovations for villages, towns, cities, regions and sovereign national capitals. The ideas can be disruptive, transformative, open-sourced and/or incremental improvements.
• Urban design, however, must maintain a balance between left and right extremes in citizen-leadership decision-making for paced intermediate solutions that answer a middle course tempered by time.

Cities rise and fall. City locations need revisions with new knowledge of Natures immutable forces. Wise use of this knowledge must rest with creative designs to bring together a new pattern for population citizen-leadership decision-making in a litany of areas for Ministry decisions.

They are land-use, clean air, water, food/fiber, energy generation, communications, monetary exchange, mobility, structures, waste matter, justice/security/safety and ecological/habitat harmony. All these issues are to be assigned an evaluation grade of worth.

Will urban design ever achieve future respect for Peace, Prosperity, and Liberty?
